How a turbofan works
1 step
The fan and the airflow
Watch the fan turn. In a turbofan, the large front fan pushes most of the incoming air around the engine core: this bypass air makes most of the thrust. The rest enters the core, where compressors squeeze it, fuel burns in the combustor, and turbines take energy from the hot gas to drive the fan and compressors before it leaves through the nozzle.
